SARGON  KING OF ASSYRIA
ALSO known as Sharru Kinu

Sargon II (reigned 722-705 BCE) was one of the most important kings of the Neo-Assyrian Empire as founder of the Sargonid Dynasty which would rule the empirefor the next century until its fall. He was a great military leader, tactician, patron of the arts and culture, and a prolific builder of monuments, temples, and even a city. His greatest building project was the city of Dur-Sharrukin (`Fortress of Sargon’,  which became the capital of the Assyrian Empire under his reign.

Sargon killed his younger brother  Shalmaneser V to usurp the throne (reigned 727-722 BCE). He was not the chosen heir but took the throne from his brother under circumstances which remain unclear. It is likely, however, that he orchestrated a coup after he had grown tired of what he saw as his brother’s inept reign. Like the great Sargon of Akkad (2334-2279 BCE), whom he modeled himself after, his throne name of Sargon means `true king’ which scholars have interpreted as his means of legitimizing himself following the coup. His birth name is unknown as is whatever position he held at court prior to assuming the throne. Although regions of the empire revolted when he took control, and he does not seem to have had the support of the court, Sargon II maintained the policies and strategies initiated by his father, improved the military and economy, and brought the Assyrian Empire to its greatest height politically and militarily. His reign is considered the peak of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

2 Kings 17:3-6  Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria. And Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute. 4 But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison. 5 Then the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to Samaria, and for three years he besieged it. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

Shalmaneser V, king of Assyria (726-722 BC)

The chosen heir of his father Tiglath-pileser III (744-727 BC), Shalmaneser V was king of Assyria and king of Babylon. But his reign lasted less than five years and ended in a succession war which brought his brother, Sargon II(721-705 BC), to power.

After Cain killed Abel and HE WAS HIDING FROM THE LORD and became vagabond” by God (Genesis 4:12), the Bible says that he “went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod” (4:16). It was in this land that “Cain knew his wife” (4:17), and it was here that his son, Enoch, was born

Sargon II Came and Finished the Destruction of Samaria

Sargon II wasted no time in finishing the job that Shalmaneser started. At the end of 722 BC after a three year siege, Samaria fell. According to the annals of Sargon II he deported 27,290 Israelites over to the territory of Persia (II Kings 17:6) and placed other people from around his empire into the area of Samaria to populate the area. The prophet Amos wrote some powerful words in his lamentation over Israel:

"Fallen is the Virgin of Israel"

Amos 5:1-2 - 1 - Hear ye this word which I take up against you, [even] a lamentation, O house of Israel. 2 - The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; [there is] none to raise her up.

"At the beginning of my rule, in the very first year I reigned…I set siege to and conquered Samaria…I carried away into captivity 27,290 persons who lived there; I took fifty fine chariots for my royal equipment."

The Bible records the destruction of Israel by the Assyrians:

2 Kings 17:22-23 - "For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day. years."
